Die Linotype-Setzmaschine revolutionierte den Druck, indem sie das Gießen kompletter Textzeilen ermöglichte. Über eine Tastatur tippte der Setzer den gewünschten Text ein. 
Dabei fiel für jedes Zeichen automatisch eine Gussform – die sogenannte Matrize – aus einem Magazin in eine Halterung. Sobald eine Zeile vollendet war, wurde sie direkt mit flüssigem Blei ausgegossen. 
Aus diesen fertigen Bleizeilen (line of types) wurden anschließend von Hand die finalen Druckstöcke zusammengesetzt.

The Linotype typesetting machine revolutionized printing by enabling the casting of entire lines of text. The typesetter entered the desired text using a keyboard. 
For each character, a mold—known as a matrix—automatically dropped from a magazine into a holder. Once a line was complete, it was cast directly using molten lead. 
The final printing forms were then assembled by hand from these finished lines of lead type.
